Background: INSTRUCT is the European Strategic
Initiative in the area of Structural Biology. It is organized around 5 Core
Centers and a similar number of Centers. During 2009 the Biocomputing Unit (BCU)
of the CNB-CSIC won the international competition to become the "INSTRUCT Center
for Image Processing in Biology" (I2PC), starting its operation during 2010 and
providing the context for this opening of positions. The BCU is well known in
the area of three dimensional electron microscopy, with over 150 publications in
the area, including public domains suites of programs and very popular image
processing methods. The I2PC is focus on developing services for the
structural-biologist community as 3DEMbenchmark, Scipion or Pepper.

Profiles needed: We are looking for a technically oriented candidate (engineer,
physicist, mathematician, computer scientist….) to work in the area of
development of a java-based platform for image processing in microscopy. Skills
in Java, Python and web services and workflow technologies as well as some
previous technical experience or a background on electron microscopy would be a
plus.

Profiles needed: We are looking for a technically oriented candidate (engineer, physicist, mathematician, computer scientist….) to work in the area of development and maintenance of a set of web pages and applications (mainly developed in Java and Python) for image processing in microscopy. Skills in Java frameworks (Hibernate, Struts, Spring…), web servers and Linux environments would be a plus.

Profiles needed: We are expecting a very technically oriented profile (engineer, physicist, mathematician, computer scientist….) to work in the area of development of new programs and platforms for image processing in microscopy, mostly developed in C++, Java and/or Python. Profiles needed: We are looking for a highly motivated postdoc with experience in image processing in a wide sense. We expect this candidate to go deeper into the specifics of the image processing tasks in Three-dimensional Electron Microscopy, developing new ideas to handle some of the most critical issues in this area. Several topics are possible, from works on the so called Single Particle Approach to woks in Tomography, depending on the candidate.

Profiles needed: We are looking for up to two predoctoral students (engineers, physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists, chemists, biologists….) to work in the development of new image processing methods in 3D electron and soft X-rays microscopy. We expect to enroll outstanding already graduated students with a strong research interest and with the desire to work in interdisciplinary environments.
One would have to formally apply to the Ministry of Science and Innovation fellowship program to a position already pre assigned to the BCU, and the other to the La Caixa Programme. One of the students will work in the development of image processing algorithms for tomography and the other in the integration of macromolecular structural information as seen by Electron Microscopy with atomic information.

Additionally, during 2011 the Spanish synchrotron ALBA will start the operation of MISTRAL, a Soft X-ray Microscopy fully dedicated to Cellular Tomography, becoming one of the very few resources available worldwide. The I2PC will work very close to MISTRAL. The BCU is well known in the area of three-dimensional electron microscopy, with over 150 publications in the area, including public domains suites of programs and very popular image processing methods. Profiles needed: Two motivated postdocs to work at the I2PC in the fields of development of new image processing methods and Soft X-ray Tomography. For the first area we are looking for a candidate with the capability to conduct original developments of new image processing methods, including their coding within Xmipp. For the second position we expect to hire an experimental biologist interested in being engaged in several cell biology projects.
